Manifesto · 出版理念言之無文,行而不遠。

Without refinement, words do not travel far. ,左傳

Ten Thousand Lake exists because the conversation between Chinese-language writing and English-language publishing has, for too long, gone in only one direction, translated from, but rarely into; reviewed in English, but rarely read in Chinese.

We publish in Chinese (simplified and traditional), bilingually where the book asks for it, and in English when a Chinese author wants their work to cross over without being smoothed out. The editor, Yu Yang, is a working translator; every title is read in both languages before it goes to print.

"萬湖" 不是一個比喻,是明尼蘇達的地理事實。我們以這個地名命名,是因為我們相信:中文寫作的將來,不只發生在北京、台北、香港,也發生在所有湖泊邊上、所有講中文的角落。

Notes on publishing in the language we speak at home.

Our first scholarly book, Listening to Ruijin by Chen Liu, is a bilingual volume that took us seven years to bring into print. It collects one of the most complete surviving manuscript records of folk songs from the Ruijin region of Jiangxi, alongside an essay on how songs travel between three generations of singers.

第一本由我們出版的中文原創作品是安然女士的《人生何處不春風》一本關於在生命的磨難中重獲內在平靜與自由的書。我們出版它,因為它屬於一種當代中文寫作的脈絡:既不濫情,也不冰冷。

This season also opens a new series under our roof, 民國女性文庫, the Republican-Era Women's Library, beginning with 紅鬃馬, the essays and short fiction of Shi Pingmei, in the orthography in which her contemporaries first read her.
