A small independent house for books that bridge cultures & generations.
Carter & Co. publishes bilingual editions, illustrated children's books, and reimagined classics from the public domain, bringing timeless stories and fresh voices to a global readership.
With a deep respect for storytelling in all its forms, we work closely with authors, artists, and translators to create works that are both visually striking and intellectually resonant. Our imprints, Little Particle Press for picture books, Ten Thousand Lake for Chinese-language literature, Sapientia Editions for humanistic scholarship, and Velvet Thread for early 20th-century women's literature, reflect our dedication to curating distinct editorial identities under one roof.
From manuscript to global distribution, we offer comprehensive publishing services: editing, design, translation, and platform-specific formatting. We are deliberately small. Every manuscript that arrives at our desk is read by an editor and answered by an editor. Whether you are an aspiring writer or a seasoned creative, Carter & Co. offers a collaborative, transparent, and artist-centered approach to independent publishing.
Carter & Co. Publishing
Tell the story only you can tell.
- Read everything. Every manuscript is read by an editor, not a form, not a filter. We respond, in person, within four weeks.
- Translate as a writer, not a converter. A bilingual book is two books; both must be readable on their own terms.
- Pay attention to objects. Paper, ink, binding, endpapers, weight in the hand, books are not files; they are things people keep.
- Imprints are houses, not labels. Each imprint has its own editor, its own taste, its own readers. The Carter & Co. roof unites them but does not flatten them.
- Revive what's worth reviving. The public domain is not a clearance shelf, it is the deepest, quietest backlist a publisher has ever inherited.
- Be transparent about money. We share royalty statements every quarter and explain how the numbers were arrived at. Always.
